Parents: What is Your District Using for Sex Ed?
Many districts are implementing a high school “health” course related to the
new high school requirements (see article above). A program which will be
chosen by many Michigan school districts is Healthy and Responsible
Relationships: HIV, Other STIs, and Pregnancy Prevention; A Module for Grades
9-12 (a curriculum binder) – it is a part of the Michigan Model. It was released
in 2007. It is being implemented in many districts throughout the state as an
“abstinence-based” or “abstinence-only” curriculum. Many parents agree
that it lacks a strong abstinence message, and there is too much on condoms
and contraception, especially in small group exercises that may be intrusive to
some students. Members of the PPI board have reviewed this binder, and are
available to network with you.
A brief description online provides very little specifics of the graphic detail of
the lessons: http://www.emc.cmich.edu/products/curriculum/9-12/912HIVobj.

Northville is in the process of potentially approving this curriculum binder as
well as four videos:
• “Abstinence: Deciding to Wait”
• “It’s Your Choice: Birth Control for Teens”
• “Sex Smart for Teens – Sexually Transmitted Infections”
• “The Teen Files: The Truth about Sex.”
Farmington is also going to be looking at their high school sex ed. It appears
that they may be considering: “Sex and Consequences” (a board game),
“Condom Line Up” (see http://askmars.org/sticondomlineupgame.php) and
something called “STI Cookie Activity”. Sounds like sex is just fun and games,
eh?
If your district is considering these for classroom use, or is already using
them, it would be great to network. If you need information on the details of
the law and parental rights, the Michigan Family Forum has a great brochure
available online or by mail: Sex Education: Rights & Responsibilities in
Michigan Law available at http://www.michiganfamily.org/main-
resources/publications/selaw-web.pdf If you would like to write an article for
our site about what is happening in your community, please contact us. (There
is an email form on this website, see “Contact Us” in the upper right.) The
districts do network, after being instructed by their ISD or even curriculum
sellers about getting sex ed passed: http://www.emc.cmich.
edu/HIV/implementing.htm See especially, under “Nuts and Bolts” about how
they suggest “Preventing and Responding to Controversy in Sexuality
Education”. This is very illustrative as to their view of parents who oppose
curricula. Hopefully, parents who would like to retain or regain the purity and
innocence of their children will network, and make sure that together, our
voices will not be ignored.
